Grade 5 - Unit 1 Patterns

Grade 5 Math Patterns Study Guide

Vocabulary
·      A variable is a symbol that can stand for any one of a set of numbers or other objects (Example: 3 x o = 4                                 o is the variable used to represent 10).
·      Numbers, symbols, and operators (+, -, x, ÷) grouped together that show the value of something is an expression. (Example: 3 x o can be used to represent the pattern in a t-table).
·      An equation is similar to an expression, but it shows that two things are equal. (Example: 3 x o = 4).

1) Identify patterns in rows and tables, and know how to extend these patterns.
·      Example: Write the next 3 terms in the following pattern: 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, ___, ___, ___
·      We learned how to extend patterns in tables (Example: Find out how many dots are in the 30th figure number) by using an expression).

2) Determine the pattern rule (start at X, add X each time) for a given pattern.
·      Example from Above: Start at 2, add 2 each time.
·      2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 11 = Start at 2, alternate between adding 1 then 2.

3) Transfer a figure or number pattern to a T-table and extend the pattern.

4) Express a given problem as an equation in which a variable is used to represent an unknown number.
·      Example: Holly made a comic book with 8 pages. She had several copies of the book printed. Holly paid for 96 pages altogether. How many comic books did she print?    96 = 8 x C

5) Solve problems involving missing numbers (variables) by creating equations and using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
·      Example from Above: C = 12

6) Create a word problem from an equation with a letter variable.
·      Example: Create a word problem that can be solved with the following equation:         P – 19 = 10
