Classroom Learning
Today students were introduced to Ancient Athens and Democracy. Students first filled out a KWL chart on what they knew about Ancient Athens, and what they wanted to know. While watching an introductory video on the topic, students wrote in their visual journals examples of justice, equity, freedoms, and representation. They then used this information to fill in a rating scale on each of those 4 topics. They will complete these rating scales again in the future and compare in order to see if their rating has changed as they have learned more information.

Ask your child what they learned about Ancient Athens and Democracy!

Classroom Learning
Today in gym we continued to work on the Mission Impossible course, as well as skipping. Students split up into two groups and while one went through the course, the others worked on their skills in skipping.

In science, students were introduced to a new unit on Electricity and Magnetism. Today, students learned that the universe is made up of 2 things: matter, and energy (what moves the matter). Choosing off of the periodic table, students drew an atom model of their chosen element. They labelled the nucleus, and drew in the protons, neutrons and electrons. Students made sure to include the appropriate number of protons (and electrons) according to the periodic table. After this, students used marshmallows and toothpicks to model different molecules, such as water and carbon dioxide, and then drew and labeled their models in their visual journals.

Nutrition Labels and Ingredients on Packaged foods

Important Dates and Information
Healthy Living Assignment (with partner) due Wednesday, February 28th
Final copy of Narrative due Friday, March 2nd
Social Studies poster (with partner) due Friday, March 2nd
Settler Farm Math Assignment - due Wednesday, March 7th
Fractions & Decimals quiz - Thursday, March 8th

Classroom Learning
In health, we spent the last 2 days learning how to read nutrition labels and ingredient lists on packaged foods. We have learned about the % Daily Value, recommended servings, actual servings, order of ingredients, and how to use this information to correctly judge the amount of saturated and trans fat, sodium, types of sugar, fiber, iron, calcium, and other vitamins. Did you know that 5% DV is considered a little, and 15% DV is considered a lot?! We also learned about the many types of sugar, and the different names that identify the ingredient as sugar. Students were given some time to analyze several nutrition labels in class, and are now applying this knowledge to their healthy living assignment where they are asked to analyze a nutrition label from a healthy product, and one from an unhealthy product.

Challenge: Over the next week, take a look at the different packaged food products in your house. Look at the nutrition labels and ingredient lists to help guide you in deciding if the product is a healthy or unhealthy choice.

Art: Recently, students have completed a recreation of their landscape in the style of a Group of Seven artist. As a class, we created a bullseye rubric that would reflect our use of colour, value, space, and imitation of our chosen Group of Seven artist. Today, students partnered up with a peer and analyzed each other's work of art, using the rubric to help focus on different elements of art. They then decided on where they were on the rubric, circling it. They were then asked to write a reflection on their art, talking about what they thought they did well and what they could improve, what worked well and what didn't work well.

Classroom Learning
To celebrate the 100th day of school, students from a neighbouring school came to work with several different classrooms. We had 24 guests in our classroom, and each partnered up with a student from our class. They worked together to create a survey question, survey 50 different people, and then create fractions from their survey. They converted fractions to /100, created a 100 grid to reflect their survey (complete with a legend), and then created a table showing fractions and decimals (as well as ratios and percentages for our Grade 6's) and a number line using their data from the survey. It was a whirl wind of an afternoon, but we had a great time with our guests and lots of fun with this mini-project!

Fraction and Decimal Number Lines! And dice games too!

Important Information and Due Dates:
Literature Circle Jobs are to be completed for Thursday  February 22nd after lunch.
Evidence Test - Thursday, February 22nd.
Daily Math questions to be completed for Friday.
French "Who Am I?" Project due Friday, February 23rd
Ted Harrison Art - due Friday, February 23rd.
Health Living (partner) assignment - due Wednesday, February 28th

Classroom Learning
Today we did some work as a class on placing decimals and fractions on a number line. Students were each given a fraction or a decimal on a cue card, and they held it up to their forehead so that they couldn't see it (like the game Head Bands). They then had to ask yes or no questions of their peers to identify their number, and then place themselves in order from least to greatest. Next, using a number line taped on the carpet, students identified if their number was close to 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, or 2.5 and placed their number accordingly.

Following this, we learned a fun new game using 3 dice, a number line, and decimals. Ask your child at home how to play "Betweeners"!

They discovered that both numbers are the same, and so arranged themselves one in front of the other, instead of side by side on the number line!

Playing "Betweeners"

We love math games!

Me to We Indoor Fair on Tuesday!

Important Information and Dates:
Math Stations have been switched this week to daily math work. Students were given a sheet with work for each day this week (including Thursday and Friday, to complete at home). They are to complete their work on a separate piece of lined paper, and keep it in their math duotangs until the entire week has been completed. This work focuses on skills, as well as some problem solving and critical thinking. Students are expected to complete their daily work at home if they do not complete it during the work period.

Me to We Indoor Fair is tomorrow!

Thursday and Friday are PD Days, so there is no school. Next Monday is also Family Day.

Classroom Learning
We have started a new unit in science on Electricity and Magnetism, and had a short introduction lesson today! Ask your child to describe the terms conductor, insulator, and resistor. Ask them to describe to you what a circuit is  and the difference between an open and closed circuits.

Today we had a police constable come into the classroom and visit with us for an hour. He talked to us about the different aspects of his job, and what tools he needed to do his job safely and effectively. He also discussed with the class on how to deal with emotions, and how emotions can impact our decision making. This was very exciting for the class, as they were able to make many connections to our recent unit on Evidence and our field trip to the Youth Link Centre!

WWI Map
French CJ Class Mascot

Classroom Learning
The school has started an initiative with "caught you caring" tickets. In our classroom, we have decided to create a "treat" to rewards students. If they receive a "caught you caring ticket, they will have their name entered in a draw for a fun little treat such as a special eraser or pencil. There will be a draw at the end of February, and right before March Break.

A new math game was sent home with students today! Did you know that playing the math game each week, and solving the problem of the week can earn you additional tickets for the draw?!!
Return the slips at the bottom of the paper by Monday, February 21th for more chances to receive tickets!

Pattern Block Fractions

Important Information & Dates:
Group of Seven Art is due on Friday

Homework check for Friday:
WWI map
French VJ - Class Mascot

Classroom Learning
Today in math we continued to work with our pattern block fraction designs from last week. We worked on using the triangle as a whole, and then counting one triangle as 1/4, 1/5, and 1/10 to figure out how the fractions would change for our design. Once we had completed our calculations, we traced our design out on chart paper and divided it into four sections (triangle = 1, triangle = 1/4, triangle = 1/5, triangle = 1/10), and we explained/showed our thinking for how we figured out each fraction. We used a variety of strategies such as tally marks, multiplications, division, diagrams, groupings, etc to help us figure out our pattern block fractions! We will be posting our findings on our bulletin board.

Three Dramatic Events: WWI, The Great Depression, Economic Boom

Important Dates & Info:
Group of Seven Art is due on Friday
Writing: you should have step #5 (planning) and step #6 (intro and circular ending sentences) complete so that we can work on the rough draft this week.

Homework check on Friday:
Social Studies - WWI map
French - Visual Journal Class Mascot

Classroom Learning
In Social Studies we have been learning about Canada during World War I, The Great Depression, and the Economic Boom after World War II. We have studied the impact on different areas of Canadian life, such as employment opportunities, agriculture, transportation, resources, etc. Using their knowledge, students completed a rating scale.

Assessing the Impact
+5

0

0

-5

Industries
Agriculture
Employment
Opportunities
Urbanization
Movement
of People
Resources
Social
Well-being of Canadians
Transportation

Using this scale, students looked at the impact of WWI/The Great Depression/The Economic Boom and decided if it had a negative or positive impact on each of the areas above. They then filled in the scale accordingly. Students have been asked to bring their rating scales home to share with parents.

At home, discuss with your parents the decisions you made for each area and why. With your parents, discuss and decide on the order of these three dramatic events, and rate them in order from most negative to most positive impact (on Canadian life).

Classroom Learning
Today we learned about the food guide and proper portions required for healthy eating. The class was divided into 4 groups and each group created a meal plan for one day, using the food guide to ensure that they had the correct number of servings for each food type, according to their age group. Then they were asked to create a "plate" and draw out one of their meals (breakfast, dinner, or lunch), showing how the food should be properly portioned. We are going to continue to work on this next week, along with a very exciting activity that will look at the salt and sugar content in different foods!

Discuss with your child how you could use the food guide to plan your grocery shopping trip each week.
